kovacs-the-dragon:
It was not like him, he thought, to feel like this and he was almost scolding himself for his apprehension. He sat on the small bed, hands in his lap. Through the paper that comprised the package in his hand, he could feel the outline and shape of the items within. When he lifted it, he could hear…
“One part wolvesbane, two parts nightshade” Mia hums to herself as she grinds the ingredients in the mortar before sprinkling dried sage into the compound. She has been working all morning with the plants and ingredients she had bought at the apothecary All of her gold is gone now but she has enough ingredients now to last a few months and she had no idea when they would make port again.
She has even managed to purchase seeds, a small bag of soil and some pots so now she would be able to grow her own herbs and propagate and take cuttings from the adult plants once they began to flourish.
Corvin squawks beside her and hops along the table, flapping his wings. His broken leg is healed now and he seems a much happier bird. Mia pats him on the head and carries on with her work.
She jumps at the sound of a soft knocking on the door and then Kovac’s voice, nearly knocking a glass jar off the table and only just catching it in time
Her heart skips a beat and the thought of seeing him. but she is in a tatty work gown, her hair tied back and dirt on her hands but she has no time to get changed, she hopes he will not think less of her because of her appearance.
He knocks again and she smoothes her gown and rubs off as much of the dirt as she can before dashing to the door and pulling it open. She smiles and gestures for him to come in.
“Hello Kovacs, I trust you are well?”
Kovacs involuntarily inhaled through his nose quite sharply, perhaps to wake his brain up which was still distracted by all this inner thought. Blinking, he pursed his lips before smiling.
“I am, thank you, and I hope you are too.” he said, noticing she was a little dirty. His eyes darted into the room as he took a step forward (still trying to keep the paclage behind his back, although he was sure it was obvious he was hiding something now) he noticed she was busy working with the ingredients she’d purchased at the port, and his smile grew a little bit.
“I hope I haven’t interrupted you at a busy time, but,” he pursed his lips again, feeling an odd sensation in his body as if he were cringing. Perhaps it was embarassment, although he inwardly scolded himself once more for having such a feeling. Swallowing, he regained his composure and continued. “…but I have something for you, a gift I mean, I was not sure when best to give it to you though.”
He brought his hand from behind his back and presented the small paper package with an (unintentionally) lopsided smile, curling his toes slightly as he looked at her.
Brushing a stray hair behind her ear, Mia gives him a soft smile and a small bow but always keeping her eyes on him. Her heart is beating fast and it feels like there are butterflies fluttering madly in her chest and her mouth is dry She notices he has his hands behind his back and she tries to take a peep without him realizing it.
“Oh no Kovacs you haven’t disturbed me at all”
She watches as he brings his arms from behind her back, presenting her with a package and places it in her hands “A gift for me?”
She quickly unwraps the parcel to reveal the amethyst slides that she saw only yesterday and her hand flutters to her mouth in surprise and delight “Oh…Kovacs, by the goddess, thank you, they are beautiful!”
She places them on the table, takes a breath to steady her nerve and then stands on the tips of her toes and kisses him gently on the cheek, breathing in his scent for just a second before pulling away, her face burning. She clears her throat trying to regain some of her composure before she speaks again.
“Thank you for your gift Kovacs, I will always wear them…to remind me of you, my dearest friend”
